Fan Of The Year

Time for the inaugural CAFC Fan of The Year Award. Luckily this season the winner virtually picks himself. It is very rare indeed for such a candidate to emerge from absolutely nowhere to scoop such a prestigious award but that is what has happened this season.

On Sunday May 15th, against Crystal Palace, who incidentally were relegated if you hadn’t heard, this fan attended his first Charlton home game since that fateful day we left The Valley for our nomadic wanderings around London, 21st September 1985. In the intervening 20 years this exiled Addick was unable to attend another home game due to work commitments, although he was able to drag himself to Wembley for the 1998 Play-Off Final, a game attended by die-hard supporters only, so no glory boy here.

So, where was this Addick exiled you ask. Perth, Australia ? Boston, USA ? Perhaps, Kingston, Jamaica ? No, somewhere far more exotic; Malvern, Worcestershire. This man clearly deserves this accolade and a major article on the official CAFC website. Far more deserving of praise than the season ticket holder two rows behind me who travels to every home game from Bath. Far more deserving than those who do likewise from places such as Bournemouth, Taunton, Northampton etc etc. Far more deserving than those who regularly attend from Scandinavia, France and even Chicago, USA. I’m speechless on two counts. Firstly, that this story is given any space on the official CAFC website and secondly that this bloke seems proud of the fact he hasn’t visited The Valley in the 13 years since our return. Malvern. Many of us travel further for pre-season friendlies and will do so again this summer no doubt. I suppose we shouldn’t discount traffic problems encountered in The Cotswolds, which I assume are England’s equivalent to the Bermuda Triangle, or our lack of Sunday fixtures in the last 13 years as legitimate reasons for not visiting sooner. The hell we shouldn’t. A travel agent ? I’d get a new career mate.

So, step forward Mr Lee Harrison, CAFC Fan of The Year.

No, on second thoughts, most definitely NOT.

Hi

Nice post.

Did he put himself up for this award, or was it a joke by his friends ?.

On reading the article i can't seem to find the bit about him saying how great a supporter he classes himself to be,that you seem to have picked up on.
I trust your response came after contacting the bloke and going into more detail about his reasons, any games away from the valley he might attend or his historical support; or was it simply based on this one article you read? Mind you anymore info might have made things less black and white for you. I assume you're a big fan of reality tv?
I live within a few miles of the valley and am lucky if i can make half the games a year because of work. Ofcourse i probably should get a monday too friday 9-5 job, and get rid of my family so i can go to all the games, i'd be a real supporter then. I know it's difficult for real fans like yourself to understand but you can support a club without it being the top priority in life. I love Charlton and the fact i have been part of it for 20 years, but other things in my life are more important to me and noone has the right to judge me on my choices on how i support my team.
If supporting charlton and running a website is all you have to enjoy in this life then that is your choice and i respct that (?), shame you can't feel the same of others who live differently.

Nice to see you got your facts right before posting this. Running a business can be a 24/7 job as this guy does. i know he has been to several away games.maybe you should have consulted him before posting this? think before you speak.

Why are you so hostile against one of our own fans? Did you even bother to check why he has not been at the Valley all this time? There are no possible way you could know if he has his hands full with his travel company, or as you clearly mean is not a real supporter. Get your facts right before you start attaking people. And you should be trying to digg some dirt on palarse or spuds fans, not charlton supporters...

Lee in no way boasted. He was simply talking about the experience on his return to The Valley. He has very big work commitment and cannot make a journey down to London every week. I respect him for making the journey down to The Valley for the game and making an article about it. He is a loyal fan even if he doesn't go to many games. Also, even though he hasn't been to the Valley since 1985 he has been to games that he can make and is even a share in the club.

You sad sacks,
When will some of you children grow up?
Mentally you are children playing I'm a better supporter than you game.
If you feel it’s a duty following Charlton whatever you think now think again because work priorities/family circumstances or even an individual’s choice to fulfill oneself differently may happen and if it does of course you will lose any feelings you have for the club won’t you???

Malvern?

How about those of us a bit further afield?

When I were a lad .... etc. etc., I was a 'real' supporter. I still am, and I promise that if I ever make it back from Indonesia, I promise to be just as sycophantic.

I'd probably get just as much abuse too.

If I ever make it back ...

I thought it amusing... well done SE7.

As for teh whiners above I see this as more of as dig at the club than the bloke himself. Although i'm looking forward to starting my new column on CAFC.co.uk entitled my Journeys with Thameslink.

Come on Jakartass,I managed to go to at least 6 to 8 home games a season whilst living in Thailand for 8 years and have manged 6 games home and away from Peru...where the flights are way more than the loss from a day running a travel agent.
